San Cristobal de las Casas

Something completely surreal... San Cristobal de las Casas.

Nothing could prepare me for what was going on inside the local church!

To try and explain it simply, when you walk in and the first thing that you notice is the candles as there must be thousands alight along with pine needles covering the floor. There was a band playing in the corner and the tune consisted of two chords being played very slowly over and over again. As we walked in there were small huddles of people in various parts of the church. They had set up shrines on the floor which consisted of candles and then bottles of fizzy drinks and an alcoholic drink called 'posh' next to the candles. They would then sacrifice a chicken. This was going on all over the church and was meant to rid them of any problems or illnesses that their families may have. Basically everyone was high as a kite on fizzy drinks and posh but they believed this to work so each to their own!

It was without doubt one of the most surreal experiences of my life and I walked out of the church having to ask myself if that had really just happened!
